프랑스에서 가장 오래된 도시인 마르세이유는 프랑스 제2의 도시로 론강이 바다로 흘러가는 지점에 위치하고 있는 지중해 최대의 항구 도시이다. 남프랑스 프로방스 알프 코트다쥐르 주 니스 남쪽 26km 지점에 위치해 있다.  과거 마르세유는 그리스의 식민지였으나 오늘날 마르세이유는 프랑스 제2의 도시, 지중해 최대의 항구 도시 이며 대주교의 영지이자, 대학으로 유명한 도시이다. 중앙 언덕에 노틀담성당(Notre Dame de la Garde)이 있고 항구의 남쪽에는 생 니콜라 요새(Fort St. Nicolas)가 있으며 북쪽에는 생 장 요새(Fort St. Jean)가 있다. 이 요새들은 모두 16~17세기 때 만들어진 것으로 프랑스가 이 지역을 지중해 확장의 거점으로 삼았을 당시의 유적이다. 18세기 구조인 Botanic garden in Borely park 은 마르세이유의 고고학 박물관에서 관리하고 있는데 Borely Familly의 소유이다. 이 곳에서 아름다운 장미 가든이 있는 프랑스식 정원을 감상할 수 있다. 그외 건축자의 이름과 동일한 곳, 장엄한 분수와 폭포, 정원으로 장식된 기념비적인 성, Longchamp 궁전등이 있다. 19세기에 건축된 마조르 대성당은 유럽에 있는 성당 중 가장 규모가 크다고 알려져 있다. 건물의 외부는 로마네스크 비잔틴 양식을 따르고 있으며, 내부는 유럽 각 지역에서 운반해 온 값비싼 대리석과 모자이크로 장식되어 있어 매우 화려하다. 내부에는 마르세이유 주교들의 무덤이 있다.
