보르도는 프랑스 제6의 도시로 면적이 4만 2300제곱km이다. 인구는 약280만 명 정도이다. 대서양 연안의 항구도시인 보르도는 프랑스 제 1의 포도주 집산지이다.  이미 오랜 옛날부터 프랑스의 지롱드(Gironde) 지방에서는 포도 재배가 번성하였다. 4세기에는 로마의 집정관이자 시인이며 포도원 주인이기도 했던 오소니우스(Ausonius)가 보르도 와인을 널리 알리는 초대 사절이 되었고, 아끼덴(Aquitaine)의 공주와 영국 왕 헨리(Henry) 2세와의 결혼으로 보르도 와인은 1152년부터 영국에 수출되기 시작했다. 시간이 흐름에 따라 와인 애호가들의 요구 수준이 높아졌고, 와인의 질에 따라 등급을 매기고, 이에 따라 가격도 차이가 나게 되었으므로 와인 제조 방법의 상당한 발전이 이루어 졌고, 무엇보다도 와인의 질에 가장 큰 관심을 쏟게 되었다. 오늘날에는 한 A.O.C.안에서도 여러 등급으로 나누어지는데, 1855년 파리 만국 박람회를 계기로 메독(Medoc)과 소테른(Sauternes)와인에 여러 등급이 생긴 것이 바로 그 예 이다. 역사 깊은 보르도는 아름다운 18세기 도시의 형태와 매혹적인 부두, 웅장한 건축물 등 고풍스런 매력을 그대로 간직하고 있는 축복받은 땅이다. 2천년전 가론땅과 포도원 등 사이에 씨앗을 내린 보르도는 유명한 사상가들을 낳은 숭고한 정신이 깃든 도시이며, 르네상스 시대의 풍요로움과 예술, 낭만이 깃든 과거의 도시이자, 최첨단 항공산업과 미래의 우주 산업 기지로서 아끼뗀 지방의 수도 역할을 잘 감당하고 있는 초현대적 도시이다. 현재는 아키텐주의 정치·경제의 중심인 동시에 학술·문화면에서는 1441년에 창립된 보르도대학과 박물관·천문대·도서관·동식물원 등이 있다. 또 로마시대의 궁전, 원형극장의 유적, 중세의 생탕드레 대성당, 생미셀교회·미술관 등 문화적 유산이 많다. 보르도 대성당은 11세기에 건축되기 시작했지만, 여러 차례에 걸친 증·개축으로 지금의 모습이 되었다. 1137년에 국왕 루이 7세가 이 성당에서 결혼식을 거행했다.
