콘월주 [Cornwall and Isles of Scilly]

영국 잉글랜드 남서부에 있는 주(州)로 면적은 3,559㎢, 인구는 50만 1267명(2001)이다. 주도(州都)는 보드인 (행정기관은 트루로에 있다)이다. 정식명칭은 콘월아일스오브실리(Cornwall and Isles of Scilly)라고 한다. 지명은 ‘콘월의 웰스인(人)’을 뜻하는 고대 영어에서 유래한다. 대서양과 영국 해협 사이에 있는 콘월반도를 차지하며 조산운동과 화강암의 관입(貫入) 때문에 지표는 기복이 심하다. 대부분이 해발고도 200m 안팎의 황량한 구릉지대를 이루며, 해안은 심한 해식(海蝕)을 받은 리아스식으로 단애·만(灣)·곶(串)이 늘어서 있고 기후가 온화하여 많은 관광객이 모여든다. 대륙 가까이 있어 선사시대부터 인류가 거주하였으며 부근에는 돌멘(고인돌), 거석묘·환석 등 유적이 많다. 광물자원도 풍부하며, 특히 구리와 주석은 19세기까지만 하여도 세계에서 손꼽히는 산지였다. 지금은 광산이 쇠퇴한 대신 원예농업·목축·낙농을 비롯하여 관광산업이 활발하고, 특히 해안을 따라 늘어서 있는 세인트이브스·뉴케이·폴페로 등의 어항은 휴양지로 알려져 있다      출처 (sola-gratia, 웨슬리 신학, 역사 연구원)

Wednesbury people and others The others are John Wesley and the highwayman Dick Turpin who stopped in the town on his way to York. Wednesbury is noted for the fierce riots that erupted in the town for six months in 1743 against the preachings of John Wesley. 존 웨슬리가 야외 설교 중 폭도들에 의해 고난을 받고있다. 

 

버밍험 웨슬리 기념비

 

존 웨슬리가 1743년부터 1790년 까지 정기적으로 이곳에서 설교를 했던 곳이다. 야외 설교중 웨슬리는 위험에 처할때도 있었는데

1743년 10월 지역 폭도들에 의해 위험에 처한 동료들을 돕기 위해 이곳에 온 존 웨슬리는 6시간동안 폭도들에 의해 이끌려 다니며

약간의 옷이 찢어지고 손에 작은 상처를 입었으나 곧 풀려났다.   (조선석, 웨슬리스토리)

버밍험 웨슬리 기념비 명판,  명판위의 존 웨슬리의 얼굴은 페인트로 칠해져 있으며 많은 낙서들이 있는채 방치되어 있다.
