인구는 26만 8695명(1999)이다. 파리 남서쪽 394km, 세브르낭테즈·에르도르 등의 지류가 루아르강에 합류하는 하구 지점에서 54km 떨어진 곳에 위치하여 외항선의 항행도 가능하며, 외항(外港) 생나제르와 함께 프랑스 굴지의 무역항을 이루고 있다. 북·서아프리카, 영국, 발트해(海) 제국을 상대국으로 석탄·석유·유지·철광·목재 등을 수입하고 기계류·밀가루 등을 수출한다. 또 공업의 발달도 현저하여 통조림·제당·제과·제분 등의 식품공업, 정유·비누·비료 등의 화학공업, 야금·조선·각종 기계·섬유·피혁 공업 등이 성하다. 갈리아시대에는 남네테족(族)의 수도였고, 로마시대에는 렌과 함께 브르타뉴 지방의 중심도시였다. 9세기에는 노르만인(人)에게 점령되었으나 952년에 해방되고, 13세기부터 브르타뉴 공작령의 수도가 되었다. 14세기에는 영국군의 공격을 이겨내고 독립을 지켰으나, 1524년 프랑스에 합병되었다. 1598년 앙리 4세가 유명한 ‘낭트칙령’을 발표한 것도 바로 이곳이다. 낭트 칙령은 1598년 4월 13일 프랑스의 왕 앙리 4세가 낭트에서 공포한 칙령. 신교파인 위그노에게 조건부 신앙의 자유를 허용하면서 약 30년간 지속된 프랑스의 종교전쟁(일명 위그노전쟁 1562∼98)을 종식시킨 점에서 의의가 크다. 앙리 4세가 즉위할 당시 프랑스는 신·구 양파의 종교적 대립으로 국내는 2분되었고, 혼란이 극도에 달하였다. 왕은 이 사태를 수습하기 위해서 직접 신교에서 구교로 개종하면서 신교도(위그노)에게도 어느 정도의 자유를 인정하고자 이 칙령을 공포한 것이다. 따라서 이 칙령은 일찍이 프랑수아 1세와 앙리 3세에 의하여 규정된 ‘구교 이외의 이단(異端)은 엄벌에 처하며, 이의 밀고자는 벌금 또는 몰수재산의 1/4을 양여한다’ 등의 조항을 삭제시켰다. 결국 국민에게 신앙의 자유를 부여한다는 취지에서 공포되었으나, 국가의 입장에서는 구교를 국교로 규정한 실정이어서 이 칙령 이후에도 구교도는 신교도에 비해서 훨씬 유리한 조건이 부여되었다. 결국 신앙의 자유를 규정한 것이라고 할 수 있으나, 위그노에게는 결정적으로 불리한 내용이었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 가톨릭측의 불만은 더욱 심하였다. 다음의 루이 13세 때에는 재상 리슐리외가 무력으로써 위그노의 정치력을 분쇄하고 칙령 중의 안정지대 인정조항을 삭제하기에 이르렀고(알레 칙령), 또 절대군주인 루이 14세는 85년 10월 18일 전 조항을 폐지하고, 위그노의 종교적·시민적 자유를 전면적으로 박탈하였다. 이로써 남·서 프랑스에 많이 살던 신교도 약 100만이 크게 동요를 일으켜 그 중의 약 40만 명이 영국·네덜란드·프로이센 등으로 망명하였다. 신교도는 거의가 근면한 상인·기사·공예인·군인 등이었으므로, 이로 인한 프랑스의 손실은 많았다. 17∼18세기에는 서인도제도(諸島)와의 거래(특히, 노예무역)로 번영하였다. 혁명 중에는 카리에에 의한 왕당파 학살이 행하여졌으며, 제2차 세계대전 중에는 반(反)나치 지하운동의 거점이 되어 시가지의 피해가 막심하였으나 대성당, 15세기에 축성된 성, 미술관 등이 남아 있어 볼 만한 것이 많다. 15세기에 들어 브르타뉴 통치자인 공작이 낭트에 주거를 목적으로 성을 세우면서, 그가 거주한 ‘낭트’(Nantes)가 수도 역할을 하게 된다. 낭트에 대성당이 건립되기 시작한 것도 바로 이 시기다. 낭트 대성당은 1,434년 브르타뉴 공작 5세가 건설을 시작하여 4세기가 지나 완공 되었다. 생피에르 대성당은 15세기부터 20세기에 걸쳐 지어진 것이지만 고딕 양식의 통일성을 갖추고 있다. 대성당의 웅장한 정면(1434~1508 건축)에는 정교하게 조각한 3개의 출입구와 2개의 높은 탑이 있다. 제2차 세계대전 때 폭격당했던 이 대성당은 1972년 화재로 지붕이 망가졌으나 바로 그해에 거의 완벽하게 복원되었다. 브르타뉴 공작 프랑시스 2세(1458~88 통치)의 장엄한 르네상스식 무덤은 다행히 해를 입지 않았다. 성당 안에는 브르타뉴 공작 프랑수아 2세와 그의 부인 마르그리트의 석관이 안치되어 있다.
