Newgrang(Temple of the Sun , Ireland)

아일랜드 수도 더블린 북쪽 40㎞ 지점의 보인 강변 계곡에는 약 5,000년 전의 것으로 추정되는 고분군이 있다. 총 25기의 이 고분은 뉴그레인지·노우스·두즈 등 3부분으로 분류돼 보존되고 있다. 이 가운데 학계의 주목을 받는 것은 뉴그레인지(New Grange) 고분군. 높이 14m(지금은 9m), 직경 76m의 타원형인 이 고분은 매장실로 이어지는 통로가 있는 양식이다.  남동쪽 입구에는 소용돌이 물결과 마름모 무늬를 새긴 바위가, 달걀 모양 외곽에는 97개의 돌이 원형으로 배치돼 있다. 또한 그 둘레에는 다시 35개의 거대한 입석이 둘러싸고 있다.  이 고분의 가장 특이한 부분은 입구 상부에 뚫려 있는 사각형 구멍. 한 사람이 충분히 드나들 수 있는 이 구멍에는 원래 돌문이 달려 있었으며 1년에 단 한번 동짓날 새벽에만 열렸다고 한다. 동짓날 햇살을 매장실로 비치게 하는 일종의 '채광구'였던 셈. 태양숭배 신앙을 가진 고대 아일랜드 주민은 이런 식으로 죽은 자를 받들어 자손의 번영을 기원했다.
