BC 479년 그리스와 페르시아 제국간의 전쟁 시 그리스의 승리 기념으로 BC 478년 델피의 아폴로 신전에 세운 기둥이다. 원래는 그리스에서 신에게 제사를 지낼때 사용하던 “황금솥을 받치고 있던 받침대”였는데 뱀 머리에는 솥이 올려져 있었다. BC 330년 콘스탄티누스 1세가 천도를 기념하고 히포드롬을 장식하기 위해 델피에서 가져와 세워놓았다. 17세기 말까지 완전한 형태로 보존되었으나 18세기경 오스만 제국이 뱀의 머리 부분을 파괴 하였다. 머리 하나는 아야소피아 유적 복원시 발견되어 이스탄불 고고학 박물관에 있고, 다른 하나는 런던의 대영박물관에 보관중이다. 본래의 높이는 8m 였으나 손상된 현재 기둥의 높이는 5.5m이다.
